Checking your Speciman

In this course you'll be shown how to check your potential speciman for any damage, or obstacles that may help you decide how to mount your bird, or whether it is suitable to mount at all.

This is a simple process, but is a very important starting point in the mounting process.

Skinning a Bird

At first glance, skinning a bird can seem like an impossible thing to do. With all those feathers and a skin that seems so fragile, one might think...” How in the world can I get that skin off without ruining it"? Well, it’s not as tough as it may seem. We’re going to walk you step by step through it, and after you do a few it’ll seem like child’s play. ..almost!

One of the birds covered in the skinning videos will be a ring neck pheasant. The pheasant, as with most upland birds, has a very tough and resilient skin. The skin comes off the body usually with ease. The pheasant is also a good size…not to big or small.

A Mallard will also be covered in this course. The Mallard is not quite as easy to skin as a pheasant. Their skin is a bit more fragile, and it also seems to but stuck to the body better. Most waterfowl are like this when compared to upland birds. You will see the little differences by watching and reading about both species.
